The ratio generally expressed as 1 : 1.618 (an approximation) has come to be described as the Golden Ratio, or the Golden Mean. Expressive of a harmony of proportion which is most pleasing to the human eye and mind, it has captivated not only mathematicians and philosophers, but artists, since at least the time of Pythagoras and the ancient Greeks, and is echoed it the famous sequence of numbers known as the Fibonacci series. The Golden Mean appears in works of art from ancient times to the modern day. |
